This tea is a variety of oolong and is produced in the northern part of Fujian Province, in the Wuyi Mountains. Currently, tea from the original mother bushes is no longer produced. However, in the early 20th century, Chinese authorities allowed seedlings to be propagated from the old bushes for future planting. Today, over 1,000 different varieties of bushes have been cultivated in the Wuyi Mountains. The most common raw materials come from two types: Zhou Gui and Shui Xian. Tea blends from various varieties have been officially allowed to be called Da Hong Pao. Therefore, anyone wishing to buy Da Hong Pao can choose a ready-made blend created by a factory tea technologist, or mix their own Da Hong Pao according to personal taste and enjoy its magnificent flavor and pleasant aroma.
According to legend, a man named Ding Xian, who lived in the 14th century, was walking to take an important exam on a hot day when he suddenly fainted. Luckily, a nearby monastery was nearby, and a monk saw him and brewed a cup of tea. Ding Xian regained consciousness and continued on his way. He successfully passed the exam before the emperor and did not forget his savior. In gratitude, Ding Xian offered the monk his red robe embroidered with a dragon, a symbol of the authority he had received. The humble Buddhist monk refused the gift, so Ding Xian draped his red robe over the tea bushes that had restored his health.
Another legend tells of incredibly clever little monkeys living in Wuyi (and still do), which were trained by locals to pick tea growing on cliffs that were difficult to reach. To prevent the little gatherers from being caught by neighbors for food, they were dressed in tiny red robes. The tea received its name from this clothing. ))
