Gushu Sheng Pu-erh Nanben Laozhai 2023 is a fresh harvest of raw pu-erh from ancient trees of Yunnan. Nanben Laozhai is a mountain village west of Mengsong township, about 3 km from the Sanmai village committee, at an altitude of about 1,693 meters. Wild gushu tea trees grow in the surrounding mountains, some of them more than 500 years old.
The leaves of such trees give a tea with a bright, concentrated presence and good resistance to repeated brewing. Only a little raw material is picked from each tree in a year, no more than 3 kg of maocha, so the batch is small and the pu-erh is valued as premium.
Characteristics
- Tea type: sheng pu-erh (raw)
- Region: Nanben Laozhai, Mengsong area, Yunnan, China
- Harvest: 2023
- Raw material: wild gushu trees more than 500 years old
- Form: loose leaf
- Flavor: floral-fruity, with honey and mango
Aroma and Taste
Dry leaf: warm, deep, sweetish; you can sense forest herbs, roasted chestnuts and wild honey.
Liquor: after the rinse the aroma is powerful, sweet-and-sour, floral-fruity. The liquor is thick, oily, soft, without pronounced bitterness; the taste has baked mango, buckwheat honey and meadow herbs. By the fifth infusion a citrus bitterness with herbal astringency appears, giving way to the sweetness of flower nectar.
Aftertaste: powerful and long, with minty coolness, fruity shades and a growing honey sweetness.
Why You'll Love It
This pu-erh holds up very well to repeated infusions: 5 g of leaf in a 150 ml teapot gave about ten infusions. The tea gives a sense of clarity and calm: it can invigorate you before tasks or smoothly relax you. A good choice if you want genuine gushu without compromise.
How to Brew
Gongfu brewing (short infusions; gaiwan or small teapot):
- 5 g of tea per 150 ml
- Water 95 °C; rinse for 5 s, during which the liquor foams
- Infusions of 10-15 s, then slightly longer
- The tea gives 10 or more infusions
Western-style brewing (teapot or heat-resistant mug):
- 3 g of tea per 200 ml of water
- Water 90-95 °C
- Steep for 3-5 min
- Do not oversteep, so the flavor stays soft
Storage
Store in a dry, cool place, away from light and foreign odors. Young sheng pu-erh does well in closed packaging and changes flavor over time.
