The Qualities of Chinese White Tea

The Qualities of Chinese White Tea

If you are looking for the most natural, refined and rewarding drink, choose Chinese white tea, prized for its delicate character and the calm it brings.

All varieties in the Bai Cha category are known for a high content of antioxidants and other valuable substances. The secret is quality raw material and minimal processing, which lets white tea keep its delicate natural character.

In this article we talk about white tea, its qualities, possible precautions and the nuances of brewing these delicate, aristocratic varieties from the Celestial Empire.

What makes white tea special

The character of white tea comes from several factors:

  • Quality raw material. The main growing region is Fujian province. The high-mountain gardens are located far from big cities and busy roads. Pickers pluck the top shoots with two leaves and a juicy bud covered with silvery down.
  • Gentle processing. White tea would not be so prized if it were intensely roasted, rolled or crushed. The master handles the raw material as little as possible, drying and withering it in the sun. This gives a light oxidation of up to 12% (for green teas, up to 30%).
  • Rich composition. The raw material, rich in trace elements from the start, keeps its value after careful processing. Hence the appeal of Chinese white tea.

White tea is a paradox: the less we interfere with the nature of the leaf, the more we get from it. Green tea is fixed with high heat, black tea is fermented for a long time. White tea is simply dried in the sun, allowed to stay almost alive. That is both its strength and its weakness: it does not forgive careless storage or old brewing leaves. But if you give it good water and the right temperature (no higher than 75–80°C), it will give you the most of its antioxidants, catechins and that very “silver” tenderness for which it has been prized for a thousand years.

Choose loose-leaf or pressed white tea; its character does not depend on the form.

White tea: what people value

  • An everyday ritual. Bai Cha is rich in polyphenols, and a calm cup of white tea is a pleasant part of a daily routine. White tea contains caffeine, so do not overdo strong, concentrated tea and enjoy it in moderation.
  • A cup for the cold season. Many people reach for white tea as a gentle, comforting drink when the weather turns cool.
  • Lightly oxidized. White teas are among the least processed teas and have a light, delicate taste.
  • A calm, focused break. White tea contains catechins, and many people enjoy it when they want a quiet moment to concentrate.
  • Part of a self-care routine. White tea is rich in antioxidants and is a popular choice for daily self-care.

What white tea contains

White tea has long been known in the Celestial Empire, where natural additions to a healthy diet are valued. The drink contains:

  • Polyphenols: powerful antioxidants.
  • Catechins: a group of plant compounds found in tea.
  • Flavonoids: natural plant compounds.
  • Vitamins: especially of groups B and C.
  • Minerals: fluorine, potassium, manganese and others.

White tea is also a concentrate of antioxidants, the compounds that tea lovers value in a daily cup.

Which variety is best to choose? There is no particular difference. Try, for example, Silver Needle white tea; any Bai Cha is a pleasure to drink regularly.

Whether Chinese white tea will bring you pleasure or disappointment depends not only on its composition but also on how it is brewed. Use soft (purified) drinking water. Drink Bai Cha freshly brewed only. If the infusion has cooled and a film has appeared on the surface, feel free to pour it out; this white tea has already lost its character.

Who should be careful with white tea

Despite all its merits, white tea can disagree with some people, as can any other tea. The main rule is to choose quality varieties without artificial additives and colorings, and not to overdo it: 2-4 cups a day at most.

White tea: precautions

  • People with individual intolerance: although it is rare, an allergy to components of Bai Cha is possible. To rule it out, drink a small cup for your first tasting and see how you feel.
  • Small children under 3: white tea contains caffeine, which may not be suitable for a child's body, especially if the child is hyperactive.
  • Expecting mothers: consult a doctor, who can take the specifics of your health into account during this important period and advise whether white tea is suitable.

If the usual green and black teas have become boring, try aromatic Chinese white tea; we have discussed what to be mindful of. If you choose quality Bai Cha and brew it correctly, you get not just a tasty drink but a real treat. It makes a great addition to a balanced lifestyle.

Frequently asked questions about white tea

How is Chinese white tea made?

Chinese white tea is made from the young leaves and buds of the tea bush, which undergo minimal processing. First the unopened buds and young leaves are picked, then they are carefully dried in the sun or in the shade to keep their natural aromas and antioxidants. Unlike green tea, white tea does not undergo heat treatment, which preserves its delicate taste and color. After drying, the leaves are lightly fermented, which gives the tea its unique taste and aroma.
